EBN Says "Use Cash, Don't Slash": Electronic Buyers' News is running an interesting editorial urging companies to think about other methods besides layoffs of saving their bottom lines during the current downturn. (This, of course, comes the day that HP lays off an "unspecified" number of workers.) Editor Crista Souza writes "I feel for the companies that for the sake of a few pennies a share must now tear down the valuable workforces that were so hard to build. I applaud those that are bold enough to endure lower gross margins or dip into cash reserves, rather than resort to the slash and burn that contributes to the feast or famine cycles in this industry."
What EBN misses in this piece is mention of H1-B refugees. (Read "A Personal Perspective on the Tech Slowdown," Aug. 7) It's one thing to go to Herculean feats in order to build your workforce, but it adds another dimension when you lure foreign workers with the American Dream, and then unceremoniously dump them the moment they start building roots. I bet those California legislators that were begging for a raised H1-B cap feel awfully silly right about now.
