Don't Piss Off Your PR Firm: Covered here in a leading PR trade, it looks like some companies rang up some serious six-figure PR fees and are now unwilling to pay.
I wonder how wise it is to piss off a PR firm, that is, irritating a company that makes its business out of getting covered in the media? Getting this covered in a PR trade is only the first step. What happens if this escalates to national media?

"Will That Be 'Tall,' 'Grande,' 'Venti' Or '0.25-micron?'": Always a good source for provocative tech career stories, EETimes is running a piece on a former Alcatel engineer who is now employed at Starbucks to make ends meet while looking for a job that best leverages her skills.
I hope that the magazine continues to follow this engineer beyond this article. We truly live in uncertain times if highly trained people are drawing espresso drinks for an hourly wage.

The Incredibly Shrinking Expectations: This piece by EETimes columnist David Lammers reminds me of a great little aphorism that Dan Niles from Lehman Brothers said at last year's Churchill Club Semiconductor Forecast symposium: "Being early to market is a lot like being wrong." It talks about the rise, failure, and disillusionment of the Japanese electronics industry that, fifteen years ago, was talking about explosive adoption of HDTV and even an "HDTV culture."
Wow...Missed that one by that much...
Worth noting is the ever-declining price of the ubiquitous DRAM chip over the years: "Spurred by the workstation market, a 1-Mbit DRAM sold for $19 in Japan and more on overseas markets [in the mid-1980s]. Just think about that for a second. A 128-Mbit DRAM sold for about $1.90 not long ago." (Steve Cullen of Cahners In-Stat Group was recently quoted as saying "DRAM is something people make until they figure out how to make something more profitable.")

Phil's Plot For World Domination Gains Momentum: Hey, gang...On Sunday, January 20, The New York Times covered my cube in an article on cube life. The article was repurposed in O'Dwyer's online PR newsletter today.

"Mr. Phelps, This Microchip Will Self-Destruct In Five Seconds": Researchers at UCSD have developed self-destructing chips which some say might be a potential propulsion source for micromechanical systems.
Well...Intel has already figured out how to make a chip that hot enough to fry an egg on. I suppose it was only a matter of time...

But I Thought Oral Bat Decapitation Couldn't Be Aired Until After Midnight...: My friend Sasha just forwarded me this news that Ozzy Osbourne will be getting his own show on MTV! Since we've separately and inexplicably gotten on Ozzy kicks lately, this is very good news. "According to the network, the episodes will include the Osbournes dealing with 'typical familial issues such as school, allowance, moving, pets, tattoos, adolescence and life on the road.'" It'll be better than Sebastian Bach's show on VH1, I'm sure...

When Bureaucrats Have Too Much Time On Their Hands: At what point can a "lumpy sauce" be classified as a vegetable? That's what the European Union is trying to figure out in an effort to figure out their import taxes! And I thought California had the exclusive copyright on Stupid Government Tricks...

Planet Earth Dodges A Bullet: Einstein used to say that "God does not play dice." But, wow, can The Big Guy play a mean game of pinball!!

Microsoft Destroys English Language: Not satisfied with destroying all competition in its market(s), Microsoft is out to tear the English language asunder through MS-Word's autocorrecting feature. There is a discussion brewing within the humorously named "SlashGoth" weblog.

Arthur C. Clarke To Be Pilloried For Setting Wild Expectations: Wired News is running a brilliant editorial called "2001: A Failure Odyssey." It follows a day in the life of the fictional (yet all-too-real) Joe Geek. "'Funny how they look at the future back in the '60s. Alien artifacts on the moon. Giant supercomputers running spaceships.'"
The movie ends with mankind achieving the next level of its evolution. We ended the year fighting a war and bemoaning cruddy investments.
