Working From Home & Discipline
Working From Home & Discipline
I've been working from home since November 2002. During that time, I think I've done some pretty darn good work on behalf of DMG and its clients.
I get a lot of questions about what it is like to work from home — the challenges and the surprises. The most-asked question always has something to do with discipline. "Isn't there a lot of potential for distraction?"
It's a fair question. The big difference in my working environment is that I now work on the same computer that I use to play Unreal Tournament. The temptation to frag bots while on the clock has never been a problem, though. I have a dedicated space for work where I live, which helps operationally and psychologically. The business books are in one place, the H.P. Lovecraft anthologies in another. When the day ends, I simply move from one room to another. In fact, I'm in the process of installing "pocket doors" to separate the two areas of the floor.
One thing you miss is the water-cooler talk. I've found that there are a few ways to alleviate these withdrawal symptoms, though. Instant Messenger is great for that. So is my webcam:
You miss air-conditioning, too. Then again, living on an island with almost no obstructions for the breeze, unbearably hot days are extremely rare.
To tell you the truth, though, I'm actually more productive here than in an office. If there's some software I need for my computer, I simply get it. I don't have to mess with a corporate IT policy and, besides, I used to be in IT myself. It's not like I'm going to ban USB keys from my house, either.
