I Have To Wait Until 2007 For Microsoft's Longhorn... ...but at least I know the viruses are already here.
According to the article from eWeek:
The attack is a proof of concept with no payload. Named W64.Rugrat.3344 by Symantec, it's very old-fashioned in technique. When executed it infects all 64-bit executable files, excluding .DLL files, in the directory from which it was executed, and all subdirectories, and then exits.

"And That's The Way It Is... Aight?"

"And That's The Way It Is... Aight?"
I managed to entertain myself quite a bit this morning when I read this news that Walter Cronkite might be in talks with MTV to help them out with campaign coverage.
The iconic broadcaster — known as "the most trusted man in America" at one point — on MTV? This is surreal. I was about five or six years old when the CBS Evening News anchor slot moved from Cronkite to Dan Rather, so I still remember Cronkite's famous catch-phrase "And that's the way it is."
(Speaking of Rather... Am I the only one who thinks that he should thank his lucky stars that we live in so-called "more enlightened" times? I keep wondering what would have happened to Edward R. Murrow if he gave Adolph Hitler the same softball interview that Rather gave Saddam Hussein. Granted, Rather probably had an off-screen gun pointed at him during the whole segment, but it's still an interesting notion to consider.)
Anyway... It would certainly be something else if Cronkite took this MTV gig.

Weblogs As Internal Collaboration Vehicle

Weblogs As Internal Collaboration Vehicle
I'm ending the week writing some correspondence and reports here at Coffee For Thought, which offers a free WiFi connection. I've got about ten minutes before I'm supposed to meet someone for dinner, so I figured I'd chunk through some RSS feeds.
I came across this interesting item: InfoWorld's Chad Dickerson has a great piece on how his publication is using weblogs for editorial and infrastructure collaboration.
Weblogs are not just for the hard-core techies. Our editorial staff recently started its own Weblog to share updated style guides, edit calendars, and other tools of the trade. I’m looking forward to seeing what unexpected points of leverage they achieve with their Weblog. It’s amazing how a system so simple and easy can produce such profound results.
Definitely worth a read. Sooner or later, maybe agencies and enterprises will catch on...

English, Please

English, Please
So, yeah... On the last day of class, one of my students (obviously very confident in his grade) chided me for averaging only one post-per-week on this blog.
So, okay. "Guess who's back. Back again. Shady's back. Tell a friend."
Truth of the matter is that things have been incredibly busy — personally, professionally, and within that increasingly blurred line in between.
How've you been? Doin' alright? Not working too hard, I hope.
Thought I'd share this item, though. I've forwarded it to a few friends and colleagues, I'm sure this blog's readers might find it entertaining.
Here's a great lesson for all tech PR people the next time they're tempted to slip into persuasive laziness and being to rely on buzzwords to convey a message:
Here...is the exact language that one of the nation’s top home-computer companies uses on its Web site in attracting customers for one of its leading models:
“Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.8GHz w/533MHz FSB, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, 40GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive (7200 RPM), 256MB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 333MHz (2x128M), FREE 15” Flat Panel Upgrade, Free Shipping!”
I’ve been using home computers for nearly 20 years. About the only thing I understand in that paragraph is, “Free shipping!”
The author offers another scenario:
Norfolk’s police dispatchers and officers, in talking to one another over their radios, are being “encouraged to abandoned their longtime use of numeric codes for something new: plain language.”

Responding to situations in “plain language,” the story said — instead of rushing off to “a 165” or “a 117” — will leave less room for errors or misunderstandings.

This reminded me of that great scene in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back that takes place on the Miramax film lot:
SECURITY GUARD: Echo Base, I got a ten-oh-seven — two unauthorized on the lot. Requesting backup.

ECHO BASE: I thought that was a ten-eighty-two.

SECURITY GUARD: No, sir. A ten-eighty-two is disappearing a dead hooker from Ben Affleck's trailer.

ECHO BASE: Ooooooh, that Affleck!

Heading To E3

Heading To E3
No, the paucity of updates isn't due to Phil getting scared off by Blogger's redesign. (Which, by the way, is very cool.)
Nope. As it turns out, I'm just getting ready for a day trip to E3. Hopefully, I'll have some words, pics, and impressions for you all when I get back.

WR: Flu.

PG: You know that if you infect the rest of the office, you drag down productivity even further than if you left.

The Great Tech Executive Blast-O-Rama

The Great Tech Executive Blast-O-Rama
Not sure what this means, if anything, but the recent news of high-profile, top-level moves at Siebel, AMD, and Seagate gives one pause.
Anyone know something I don't?
