I'm Back

I'm Back
Yes... I know that your front lawn grows faster than the number of postings to this blog.

I'm not going to apologize for the lack of updates here. Things have been busy and I'm just not going to be one of those bloggers who bore their readers with long, drawn-out posts about the incredible, mind-blowing set of circumstances that resulted in a hiatus from the blogosphere.
Anyway... The good news is that I'll be giving a talk about PR and blogging late next month. Stay tuned.

You Crafty Virus Writers

You Crafty Virus Writers
Sending me your diabolical payloads from addresses like "Sales Dept." and "Media Relations" isn't going to work.
No, really. I've received about 40 from you — and from those you've duped — in the past couple of days.
Please stop.

Working From Home & Discipline

Working From Home & Discipline
I've been working from home since November 2002. During that time, I think I've done some pretty darn good work on behalf of DMG and its clients.
I get a lot of questions about what it is like to work from home — the challenges and the surprises. The most-asked question always has something to do with discipline. "Isn't there a lot of potential for distraction?"
It's a fair question. The big difference in my working environment is that I now work on the same computer that I use to play Unreal Tournament. The temptation to frag bots while on the clock has never been a problem, though. I have a dedicated space for work where I live, which helps operationally and psychologically. The business books are in one place, the H.P. Lovecraft anthologies in another. When the day ends, I simply move from one room to another. In fact, I'm in the process of installing "pocket doors" to separate the two areas of the floor.
One thing you miss is the water-cooler talk. I've found that there are a few ways to alleviate these withdrawal symptoms, though. Instant Messenger is great for that. So is my webcam:

You miss air-conditioning, too. Then again, living on an island with almost no obstructions for the breeze, unbearably hot days are extremely rare.
To tell you the truth, though, I'm actually more productive here than in an office. If there's some software I need for my computer, I simply get it. I don't have to mess with a corporate IT policy and, besides, I used to be in IT myself. It's not like I'm going to ban USB keys from my house, either.

Run A Blog, Lose Your Job

Run A Blog, Lose Your Job
I know I'm late getting to this, but here's an instance of someone who got canned because of her blog. "Troutgirl" evidently worked for Friendster.
The unfortunate thing is that the posts in question (1, 2) are fairly vacant in terms of their reasonably predicted affect on Friendster's PR.
I'm interested in hearing from Blogservations readers, particularly the ones that run PR blogs. Has your company ever threatened you based on your blog, or demanded editorial oversight as to what you post? Let me know. I'll post the answers anonymously here.
Via Scoble.

Back From Burning Man

Back From Burning Man
I was at Burning Man for most of last week and had a blast. I hope to have some pictures up on this site pretty soon.
In the meantime, Erin was a bit quicker-on-the-draw in terms of getting some pics up.
