Is the Internet truly global?
Is the Internet truly global?
Interesting opinion piece over at CNET. I especially liked this part:
At the end of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's hourlong address at the company's recent Government Leaders Summit, a representative from the Internet Society of China made the following remark in the ensuing Q&A session.
"Mr. Ballmer, now we still have to type in 'weather.com.cn' to check the weather. Most Chinese people can't do that. They just want to type in 'tian qi' (Chinese for weather)," he said. Short of a more concrete answer, Ballmer acknowledged that Microsoft needs to work better with the various domain name authorities to resolve this problem.
He brings up a good point. We kind of take for granted that the Internet uses Roman characters as the means by which information is accessed. While there are a ton of sites that use multi-lingual and multi-character-set content, you still have to get to those sites using the Roman alphabet.

"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott
"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott
As most of you already know, influential metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was fatally shot during the first song of his band Damageplan's set by a deranged fan.
Founding the seminal group Pantera with his brother/drummer Vinnie, Dimebag shook up a generation of guitarists who were becoming dangerously complacent with finger-tapping, whammy-careening cliches. Rumor has it that Dimebag amassed his stash of gear by winning every guitar contest in his native Texas before the promoters got sick of his consistent wins and banned him from participating. His technique and songwriting were together as incredible and unique as his characteristic tone.
Of course, there will be the requisite number of lawmakers and special interest groups that will attempt to use this tragedy for political gain. They're going to pore over every lyric (violent as they are) and grit their teeth at every stacatto, flatted-fifth guitar riff in an effort to find out what about the music drove this clearly unhinged nutcase to open fire.
The thing to remember is that it's not the music, it's the listener. It's not the gun, it's the shooter. After all, Charles Manson claimed that The Beatles, of all groups, influenced him to commit his heinous crimes.
Dimebag's favorite drink was reportedly Seagram's and Coke, a concoction called a "Black Tooth Grin." I'm pretty sure my cousin might consider serving the same at this evening's poker night.
In the end, Dimebag joins the likes of Randy Rhoades in the pantheon of metal guitar innovators who have been tragically silenced before their time.

End Of The Personal Blogger?
End Of The Personal Blogger?
Om Malik brings up a good point:
I have looked high and low but I don’t find many individual [blogs] represented on Yahoo. Instead dominating the list are more "pro" blogs like Engadget, Gizmodo and scores of others from say the Weblogs Inc, stable.
True enough. It's a pretty foregone conclusion that the A-list is getting ever smaller.
That said, I certainly don't rate my blog based on how many hits I get (quite a bit), how many times I'm linked, or whether a major portal likes me. To tell you the truth, I don't think you should either.
Is the individual blogger being "marginalized" in favor of more corporate blog-or-bloglike concerns? Maybe. Then again, you have to ask yourself why you blog in the first place. Is it to interact better with your customers? Provide a platform for issues response and comment? Vent your spleen online? Publish without a publisher? What?

Sunday School Would've Gone A Little Bit Faster
Sunday School Would've Gone A Little Bit Faster...
...if hallucinogenic teas were somehow involved.
The concept of the Trinity was difficult enough to grasp while still in an unaltered state.
