Just 'Cause It Needs To Be Said

Just 'Cause It Needs To Be Said

So, the other day I sent out the email to contacts both personal and professional about my move to Los Angeles.

I wanted to say, in this public forum, that the support that a great many of you have shown regarding this choice has been no less than staggering. In a word, "Wow." Many, many thanks to all of you who showed up at my party at the Englander and/or have called/emailed/semaphored your encouragement.

Now continues the task of packing. It's incredible how much "life detritus" one collects in a short amount of time. (I've lived in this Alameda, Calif., house for just over two years.)

God love Craig's List, let me tell you. I had to get rid of some furniture (the kitchen in the new place isn't nearly as cavernous as the one here), and a couple of posts to CL took care of that right quick. In fact, doing so very nearly covered my moving expenses!

Thanks to CL, I also found a place to live in LA. Very, very cool.

In the meantime, I've sort of rediscovered Paradise Lost. (Not the epic poem from Milton, but the band, both of which I was introduced to in college.) When I was at KSMC, I devoured their Icon and Draconian Times albums. They did this cool '80s-retro-sounding album called Host, and then a heavier take on those musings with Symbol Of Life. These CDs haven't left my car stereo this week.

Turns out that SBC doesn't serve West LA. This means I'll have to break my DSL contract here. Them's the breaks, I guess. Looks like I'll be a Verizon customer now.

Funny thing... Both companies have made public mention of soon supplying "naked DSL", or DSL sold to customers without local phone service. Not one customer rep knows anything about it.

In any case, I'm going to go forage for more boxes. The next post will likely come from a cafe in Culver City. I'll be happily using their municipal WiFi (and patronizing local businesses until my new broadband service comes back up.

Registration at USC Annenberg is August 15. Yes, indeed, this is for real.
