Indecency Legislation
Indecency Legislation
Oh, jeez... Here we go again...
On his second attempt this month, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) is attempting to bring broadcast "indecency" legislation to the Senate floor.
The bill is sponsored by Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas), a staunch social conservative. The bill, if enacted, will increase the fines on broadcasters for airing indecent material from $32,500 to $325,000.
Yes... Having solved every other problem in this country, we're heading back in this direction.
It might be a good start if... You know... Parents would work at... Ummm... Being parents.
"Never fear," Washington says. "We'll legislate values for you."
What happened? The Republican party used to be the party of personal responsibility. You know... Limited government and that sort of thing.
Two words, Senator Frist: "Tipper Gore."
For Pete's sake, guys... You already pushed Stern off of the airwaves.
The folks at Sirius and XM are probably dancing a jig. The more the government exercises legislative and regulatory power on the public airwaves, the more people will be drawn to pay-to-use services.
One of the commenters on the LP blog, "Chuck", said it best:
Smoke and mirrors. The biggest indecencies are launched from the 10 mile square District of Columbia.
Fark had this perspective:
Senate votes to make network TV boob slippage cost a zillion dollars. Graphic depiction of a man getting his head severed by a freight train at 9pm on CSI season finale last night still OK
May we someday recover from Janet Jackson's bosom and the ludicrous legislation it may inspire.
