The Edelman earSHOT "Podcast Studio"
The Edelman earSHOT "Podcast Studio"
I came across this post in "...The World's Leading..." by way of Andrew B. Smith, which I found through Constantin Basturea's excellent Digg-for-PR thingy.
In covering the "Weber Shandwick Podcast Studio," PR Week describes:
The soundproofed studio is expected to open next month. The 12 sq ft room will contain a table and chairs for clients, plus two professional-quality microphones and a PC that will store the required digital capture software.
(I'm assuming that "12 sq ft" is a misprint. After all, at over 6'1" and about 1.5' shoulder-to-shoulder, "12 sq ft" will be barely large enough for my coffin when that time comes.)
For the sake of their readers, PR Week should understand that it is the distribution mechanism that defines a "podcast," not the production mechanism. From that perspective, a $150,000 state-of-the-art facility is no more a "podcast studio" than the condenser mic on my Rio Carbon MP3 player.
My fear is that the average PR Week reader will define "podcast" as "an audio file placed for download over the Internet, combined with the means to 'game the system' in the iTunes directory."
So, in the interest of "transparency" and "disclosure" and all that, here's a look at the "Edelman earSHOT podcast studio."
Every once in a while, superproducer Anthony Stagno will let me use the production facility in our Chicago office when I'm in town. And, of course, all-of-the-above is available for client-service use.
To put it country-simple, though, the earSHOT "podcast studio" is wherever I am. I'm also teaching others how to use Audacity, since I strongly believe that such skills are inevitably going to be required from account folks moving forward.
Incidentally, Weber Shandwick's James Warren is doing a fair job responding with refreshing humor and aplomb.
